The Name Game.

In lesson 3 of our hand book we were studying The Name Game. So, i chose to write about Coca-Cola, the most popular artificial beverage in the world.

The Coca-Cola's two main ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coca leaf and the caffeine from Kola nut, instead of  Coca-Kola, the ¨k¨ in kola was replaced with a ¨c¨ for marketing purposes.

When you have a Coca-Cola bottle or can in your hands you can read the ingredients listed on the side, but they are not all the ingredients, the exact formula is a trade secret. there is a myth which says that only two executives have access to the formula and each one only have half of it.

Is interesting to know that John Pemberton, the creator of The Coca-Cola's company, was an addicted to morphine, after years of fighting against the addiction ended up on creating a new drink, so he mixed the cocaine and the caffeine and converted into a syrup and added carbonated water, he finalized the formula in 1886, in Atlanta Georgia. Then, he made an alcoholic drink called French Wine Coca, ( I'm pretty sure that all of us will would have loved to try that drink, specially YOU, Atilano 😆 ) but prohibitions laws in Atlanta prevented him to selling it, after that he created a similar drink, non-alcoholic version. Frank Mason, his partner in crime, you know that every drug addicted are never alone, 😜 suggested him the name Coca-Cola for the Syrup formula.

Pemberton faced several problems with his beverage, as it contained coca leaves during a period were cocaine was a topic on debate. Because cocaine is a addictive substance, the manufactures of Coca-Cola did not want to be known as the creators of an addictive cocaine beverage in the market, so by 1902 the beverage contained a very little quantity of cocaine to protect the trademark, but in 1929 the soda became cocaine-free and the beverage was still able to maintain its name.

So, guys we already know that the main formula of Coca-Cola, a soda that almost everybody in the world even kids drink, still being a secret. I wonder what the hell are we drinking? Sorry for the expression.

Urban Legends

In the second lesson of our handbook we were talking about Urban Legends. So, I'm going to introduce a place that i have visited in the amusement park were i'm working right now in wildwood New Jersey which had gruesome stories in the past.

The Ghost Ship is one of the attractions that Moreys Piers has in one of the three amusement parks, the interesting thing is that this is not a created Ship,  it's a real ship that was haunted long time ago, it was in disuse in the early 80's and was put in the park with the purpose of scaring people and trust me, i'd tried and it really scares, it was extremely creepy. it has like 10 rooms inside and 12 different stories. J- Ball

In the first lesson of the  handbook that we were studying in class we talked about J-Ball which is the baseball in Japan. I will write some interesting facts about the Dominican players in Japan.

The first Dominicans that played in the professional baseball league of Japan were Sijo Linares, who was the first one playing in a single match with the Taiyas Whales in 1971. Also, in the same year, Jose Vidal Nolasco who was born in La Romana, invaded that league in Japan.
Then, other players followed him, as Mateo Rojas Alou in 1974, Rafael Batista in 1975 and Winston Llenas in 1976. They were the pioneers in Baseball in Japan even not speaking the language in this country.

THE UPS AND DOWNS OF YO-YOS

This unit brought me a lot of memories because yo-yos were my favorite play toy when I was a boy. This plaything brought me a lot of joy. I remember when I used to sit on the patio of my house and spend hours and hours playing with my yo-yo just by myself, those were my best time. 

This was one of my favorite lessons because I was learning about something that I always use it but I did not know of its origins. For me was very interesting to know about the origin of the yo-yo,  even though no one knows for sure when or where yo-yos originated, but according to the book, the best guess is that it was originated in China about 3,000 years ago. To know the history of yo-yos was one of the most amazing things that I have done in my life.

On the other hand, from this unit, I also learned a lot of new words that from now will help my English vocabulary.

Remembering this unit, I can say it was about Yo-yos, not only their movements, but the good and bad moments of that plaything.

My favorite toys were the dolls, so that's why I think of I was too bad playing with yo-yos. Yo-yos are for girls and for boys, but in my opinion, they are more for males.

According to the unit, yo-yos are always in the Market, they have times that they are very sold, but have ones that their sale falls.

I agree with this, because I remember that in my childhood, yo-yos were popular, but nowadays, they are not too popular as before. I think of it is due to the technology, because today children use more intelligent gadgets than toys.

For me, in spite of everything, yo-yos won't disappear so easily, because they are one of the oldest toys. Yo-yos have kept through the years, although they are not as popular as before, they are still in use and for sale.

As you guys know, our country needs organization. I remember that in class was mentioned a truth. It was that smart cars would be a failure in our country, due to the disorder. Such as:

Imagine those cars in any situation of those above. As soon as they be exposed to the streets, they would become a mess. Also imagine, if normal streets are almost never  repaired, just think about intelligent highways.
Sharing this, I don't mean we will never be ready, but if we want to grow up as a country, these problems should be resolved before those cars are exposed.

I myself hope to have one of those cars one day.

What do you think of a smart car?

Well, a lot of things can to my mind. First of all, I have to say that I love technology !!. I also love cars. Technology is an awesome thing. Without it, you'd not be reading this right now. But, talking about smart cars I think that these cars will make a lot of difference in our world today. But this also implies that the population must be ready for these changes and I don't think that our country is ready to have smart cars in our streets.

This lesson was so interesting for me, while the teacher was talking about the class I was getting more and more interested about the class because He was explaining everything about the smart cars. These cars will have the most advanced technology and they will be safe!!. The only thing that I don't like about these smart cars is they may not be smart enough to do certain things like to change their own oil or correct automatic error detection. 

In my opinion, smart cars will make a lot of change in our lives so I would like to have the opportunity to drive a smart car!!. Even though our country is not ready to have smart cars I hope that someday we as a country will have that type of technology.

In this unit I learned what people can or can't do when they want to name a company.

Here are some tips I learned and I would like to share with you, of what to do before choosing a name:

-First at all look for a catchy name.
-Advise yourself before putting a name.
-Look for an available name.
-If you are going to choose the same name of another company, make sure it is not the same business.
-If you are going to use a name in other language, make sure the name is appropriate.

Talking about this topic, if I had to name a company and choose what it would be about, I would choose a restaurant, and I would call it:

Hello! Today I would like to share with you guys an experience I had. It's nothing scary, but it is doubtful.

My mother's mother lives in  a countryside called Jaibon Laguna Salada, it is located in Valverde Mao. As a costume, I used to visit my grandmother and other relatives on vacation, Christmas or holidays. In jaibon people believe too much in Galipotes, supposedly they are men that can become in animals and other things. People say that los galipotes like to frighten people at night. The truth is that in one of my trip over there, specifically on one December, I had to bring some food to a cousin of mine, so I went with two girls that are my cousin too to bring him the food. I was the older in the group. On our way, it was dark. In the middle of the way, there were three donkeys exactly the same height that my cousins and I, they were very strange and their presence gave chills . The animals were on the middle prevented the step to walk. As soon as we saw them, one of my cousin ran so I went after her, because I was responsible of her. We decided to go another way, when we arrived, we told what happened to everyone, and they told us there isn't any donkey in jaibon the strange is that is was 9 P.M. on December 24. We and an uncle of us went to the spot where the animals were located, but they weren't there or around the place. The unusual for me is the date, the hour, and that the donkeys were three and so my cousins and I, they were the same height as we, but the weirdest is that nobody had donkeys in Jaibon, even nowadays.

Yuen was an important figure in action movie born in china . But he is recognize and admired for his job quality , yuen is a master using sworsmanshiip .

My fathers told  a story about a ciguapa that a man had stolen and that in order to have it with her  it ate the soles of his feet , he said that he had brought it to a place for enough away that he could not gone home   . I don't know if it  was true or stories what my father narrated to entertain the children but now I can see that the real story about that legend narrates something similar they say that it was a female creature similar to an Indian woman who walks with her feet upside down  and who emits a peaked sound to the song of partridge and who comes out at night toking advantage  of the current of the water they also  say that they could be caught with the help of a whit dog on the full moon night they say that the ciguapa was around the women in the kitchen she used to steal the salt.

Mastering the Law Of Gravity

This is one of my favorite topics because I really love martial art movies, they are actually my favorite ones. I feel very excited when I see those actors flying, fighting and jumping higher than a regular person does.

I think they are unique that's the reason why those type of movies are so entertaining and you never get bored because you always expect more amazing things.

When I was a little boy I thought that all the things that actors used to do were real and that they were experts in what they did because they worked hard and practice since their childhood.

When I grew up I realize that most of the movements that actors do in the movies are tricks and they use effects that make them seem real, but I am still loving Karate movies because they are not boring and some of them seem to be part of the reality.

Something that I have to mention is that Yuen Wo-Ping is considered the world's foremost action choreographer . A veteran of more than fifty movies.

This lesson was  very interesting for me because it is about finding a good name for any company, how to choose the best name for a company. Something that I will never forget about the reading is that each year, business executives around the world struggle to find original and catchy names for their companies and their companies´products. According to what I read it is very important to find a good name for a company because a name can define the successes that a company can achieve.

While we were taking this lesson I remember that the teacher asked us to talk about our dream company so my answer to this question was that my dream company is a software company in which I can make a lot of software, and I would name it, SOFTSOLUTIONS. Why I would name it with that name ? because I think that this is catchy name it is very easy to remember.

Also in this lesson I learned a lot of new words, such as

Unit II- Urban Legends

                                         Urban Legend

Dominican witches are the persistence in the belief of its existence. It is not common for people to talk about known witches, that they can fly on their brooms and make objects disappear.

This happened in Moca two witches were teaching a rookie witch to fly a broom and it hits a coconut bush all the neighbors came out to see what happened, this happened in the early hours in the morning.

I can say that the witches in our country get your wealth because they can read the futures in the background of coffee cups, make love potions and make you win money in the lottery.

 

I totally believe in urban legends such as witches, I can also say that I believe in vampires and many myths to the point that I would like to travel where is the origin of Dracula and Werewolves.

J-Ball

I was reading about J-Ball and I was focused on vocabulary because is necessary for me, in this unit I learn a lot because I didn't know anything about J-Ball, for example, the time when it was created, in this unit said: The National League was established in 1876 and the rival American League in 1901.

To know another word is very important to me because is the base to learn about something.

Here in the Dominican Republic, there are a lot of players who earn a lot of money, is one of the most widely watched and played sports in the world, the first world series was played between the Pittsburgh Pirates, the champions, in 1903.

Although born in the United States, over the years baseball has become internationalized.

Unit II. Urban Legends

Urban Legends 

In this unit I had the opportunity to learn about Urban Legends. Now, I know the meaning of urban legends.  A Urban Legend is an apocryphal story told as true, also urban legends are simply contemporary examples of folklore and they appear spontaneously.

I don´t have to much to say about this Topic but I will write some Dominicans traditional urban legends. 

La Ciguapa

This is a story that I've heard since I was little boy and people tell it like a real story but it's not really real.  

La Ciguapa is described as having dark or blue skin with slanted black eyes, long lustrous hair she uses to cover her body and backward facing feet. They are nocturnal and are said to have a hunting spirit, looking for wandering men.

Another Urban Legend that I´ve heard since I was a little boy is EL CHUPA CABRA

El Chupa Cabra is a scary urban legend and people described it as a reptile like creature that eat animal and also people. This urban legend is not originate in the Dominican Republic. A lot of people believe that the chupa cabra is real but in my opinion that is not true.

EL CUCO

El cuco is another urban legend because this is a history that is not true but it appear to be true. it is used to get children to behave and go to sleep, el cuco has been terrifying children since the island was colonized.

Unit 1 J-Ball

The first lesson from this English level was J-Ball

In this opportunity I am going to talk about the Origins of Baseball. This lesson was not my favorite unit because I don’t feel passion for this sport.

This game was originally known as ´town-ball¨ developed in the early nineteenth century in the northeastern United States. Henry Chadwick was an English-born American sportswriter, baseball statistician and historian, often called the "Father of Baseball" for his early reporting on and contributions to the development of the game. He wrote the first rule book.

In this unit I learned that the baseball has been part of the Japanese landscape since 1873, it was introduced in that year by an American teacher, Horace Wilson.

This sport was first played by schoolboys. Primarily used as a teaching tool, baseball was played quite rigidly in Japan, as if it were a martial art that players could use to strengthen themselves physically and mentally.

The Yomiuri Giants have also featured the biggest names in J-ball.

Their first superstar was Tetsuharu Kawkami, nickname ¨the God of Batting¨.

The next great Giants star was Shigeo Nagashima.

The baseball was born in the United States, over the years baseball has become internationalized. Among Latin America countries, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela have strong baseball traditions and have contributed many players to the major leagues in the United States. Baseball has also taken root in East Asia: in Korea, Taiwan, and, especially, Japan.
